Up until the early '70s, Lonnie was best known as an exceptional sideman, but once he stepped out on his own (working with his band The Cosmic Echoes), he became one of the originators of the Jazz/Fusion movement.     I started out listening to Lonnie Liston Smith's work just recently. His best of album I just reviewed was culled from these five albums (1973-1976) that form this boxset. I'll try to condense that review, then relate what i think of this 5CD box set packaging. If you're completely unfamiliar with who Lonnie Liston Smith is, he's a pianist/composer who started out playing with Pharoah Saunders on his KARMA album, then played with Gato Barbieri on his early 70s albums, which were slightly less avant-guard than Pharoah's material from that era. From there, L L Smith worked with MILES during the BIG FUN/ ON THE CORNER sessions. After that, he formed this COSMIC ECHOS band with his brother who sings. Most of these albums (the COSMIC ECHOs ones) comprise about one half instrumental songs, and one-half vocal songs, which have cosmic awareness type lyrics about love, peace, rainbows and brotherhood.
